Unifying Form and Function
SAS Institute Inc. is the world’s largest privately held software development company. Their reputation is built on innovation and creativity. Over the course of a 30 year business relationship, SAS has trusted GFBA to consistently deliver the high level of quality design and service expected to meet the growth demands of their expanding campus.
The Executive Briefing Center is a 290,000 square foot building containing conference spaces and a six story office tower. The building is located in a 24.5 acre drainage area with approximately 12 acres of impervious area. Managing the stormwater runoff generated by this development presents a significant engineering challenge.
Managing the stormwater runoff generated by this development presents a significant engineering challenge.
To meet this challenge, GFBA’s civil engineers and landscape architects worked in tandem to integrate a surface pond for stormwater treatment as an amenity into the overall site plan. The pond is bordered by stone walls to match the native stone used throughout the site. The building’s rear terrace leads to a formal garden with a central reflecting pool. Water splashes over a cascade from the reflecting pool into the pond, and an overlook terrace sits above.
Aquatic plants along the banks of the pond improve the water quality and beautify the surroundings, and native grasses used throughout the site reduce the dependence on irrigation.
GFBA’s multi-disciplined team was able to convert a liability into an asset. The resulting landscape provides a beautiful, tranquil place for SAS’s employees and guests to relax between business sessions. The inclusion of such spaces throughout the campus is one of the reasons SAS is consistently ranked among the World’s Best Workplaces.
